ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 on Windows 10

I’m getting an old Dell Inspiron E1505 upgraded to Windows 10.

Most things are going well, but there are definitely some driver difficulties, the 1st of which are the graphics.

This comes via GreenReaper on the Microsoft forums, but I wanted to replicate it here just in case the post goes away: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/no-windows-10-driver-for-amd-radeon-x1400/9e0afae5-e571-483d-b0e0-841ae6ae20c1?auth=1

(If you trust me, you can skip this whole part and simply download the  zipped Windows 10 Radeon X1400 Win 10 driver)

First, download the driver from the Microsoft Update catalog:
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=82e1e91f-cfcf-42e2-86f8-e273b826bb36

If the link fails, search http://catalog.update.microsoft.com
For: ATI Technologies Inc. – Display – ATI Mobility Radeon X1400

Open the downloaded cab file, and copy the contents to a new folder.
Create *another* new folder within that folder called: B_72960
Copy all of the files into that folder as well (or it will error)

Reboot into Safe Mode
Click Start->Power
Hold down the Shift key and click Reboot
Click Troubleshoot->Advanced Options->Startup Settings->RebootChoose “Safe Mode” on reboot

When you’ve booted into safe mode, open Windows Explorer

Right click “This PC” and click “Manage”
Click Device Manager
Click the arrow next to “Display Adapters”
Right Click “Basic Display Adapter” (or whatever it says)
Click Update Driver Software
Click Browser my computer for driver software
Choose the folder with the downloaded driver
After the installation, reboot.

Then voi la! Enjoy your accelerated graphics and the beauty of Windows 10! 🙂

  1. (If you trust me, you can skip this whole part and simply download the zipped Windows 10 Radeon X1400 Win 10 driver)

I trusted you and working for me perfectly on Dell inspiron 6400 x64 win 10..Thank you for your help.

  2. This seems a bit complicated (and I couldn’t get it to install as described) when the Windows 7 driver downloaded from the MS Catalogue works fine? Unzip the CAB file with 7Zip (or similar) and do a manual update for the driver (I did it in safe mode just to be certain). Works fine.

  3. Hi! Tried it but doesn’t work. Still doesn’t allow me to use the max screen resolution and reports driver problems in the device manager. Running last Win10 version. Before that it worked. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    1. Tek, I haven’t had the occasion to try on 32-bit Windows 10. It’s possible Microsoft has a 32 bit driver on their site that you might be able to use a similar process with. If you’re successful let me know and I’ll update the post. Good luck!

  4. Works on 32bit. The first search on Microsoft is the x86 driver. The second identical listing is the labeled AMD64. Just finished installing on my 32bit E1505. Thanks, Adam. The B_72960 is so obscure. How did you figure it out? I neglected to make the folder and it failed at first. Just silly that Microsoft doesn’t include this in Windows 10 natively.

    1. You’re welcome! Glad it worked for you. Lots of trial and error, and piecing together bits and pieces from a bunch of partial solutions. I keep waiting for the day it’ll work out of the box on some future Windows build totally randomly, lol.

  5. This used to work on my Dell 6400 laptop in 32 bit mode but as Win 10 was updated the computer defaulted to the basic windows display driver. I have used the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) removal tool and reinstalled from safe boot, but end up with a buggy driver in regular window (e.g., task bar missing, can’t see parts of windows, flashing screen…) If I use DDU to uninstall in safe mode then reboot and install the x1400 win 7 32 bit drivers in regular mode, the driver works without the flashing etc. until I reboot and it is lost again.

    Any ideas?

    1. The solution turned out to be to reload Windows 10 as 64 bit. The Win 7 ATI drivers for the x1400 work fine after turning of some of the more modern attributes like transperancy.

  6. I have a dell e1505 with ati 1400x card in it. I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10. The graphics was working fine then one day it just stopped. I tried doing the patch as you laid out and it caused other issues. The modal boxes flicker, the start menu is transparent. and eventually the driver crashes. I am on the latest install.
    Any sugesstions?

    1. Im on windows 10 x64. After reading some of the comments, it seems other people had similar issues, Any idea what to turn off?

      1. Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you! I haven’t had that issue myself, but you can try disabling some of the Windows 10 Visual Effects. Here’s a quick guide I found.
        https://thegeekpage.com/disable-all-animation-visual-effects-in-windows-10
It’s also possible it’s an artifact of upgrading from Windows 7. If turning off the effects doesn’t do the trick, you can try backing up, wiping the drive, and doing a clean install of Windows 10.
Let me know how you make out.

  7. Thanks for this guide, worked perfectly. Dusted off my old e1505, upgraded the dead hdd to a new ssd, with a fresh Win 10 LTSC, and this graphics driver was the last thing I needed to get it running back to normal. All my other plans of attack failed, even resorting to downloading 2 “driver installer” programs, one threw errors trying to install this, the other asked me to pay to continue (hah, no way.) – So glad I found your guide before giving up.
